What Moves the Price

Whether ducts already exist
The fork that decides everything else. Hanging a condenser and coil off a working furnace is the cheap path at $5,000–9,500 on a typical detached home. Building ductwork into a house that never had it pushes the same job to $12,000–20,000, and at that point ductless heads are usually the better answer.
Tonnage and home size
Capacity follows floor area: roughly 1.5–2 tons under 1,200 sq ft, 2–3 tons to 2,000, 3–4 tons to 3,000, and 4–5 tons above that. Each step is about $1,000–2,000. Oversizing is not a safe default — a unit that's too big cools fast, shuts off early, and leaves the house cold and clammy.
What the furnace can do
A variable-speed condenser bolted to a single-stage furnace blower gets you the price of good equipment and the performance of the old blower. Where the furnace is near end of life, the sensible order is furnace first, or both at once.
Electrical
The condenser needs its own circuit and an outdoor disconnect. Technical Safety BC's 2026 homeowner permit for a new circuit is $136, while contractor permits are priced on job value. Older panels sometimes can't take another load, and then the number moves.
Where the condenser can sit
Side-yard clearances, strata rules, and municipal noise bylaws all narrow the legal spots. A long line-set run to the only workable corner of the lot adds both material and labour.
No rebates on cooling
Provincial rebate money is written around heat pumps, not cooling-only equipment. A heat pump cools identically and heats as well, so a straight AC install is one of the few HVAC jobs in BC you fund entirely yourself.

How the Job Actually Goes

  1. Load calculation and system check

    The contractor works out the cooling load, then checks whether the furnace blower and the existing ducts can move that much air. A house with undersized returns will not cool evenly no matter what condenser goes in the side yard.

Signs It's Time to Replace

How to Keep the Cost Down

  1. Price a heat pump before buying cooling-only equipment. The hardware overlaps almost completely, but only one of the two attracts CleanBC and BC Hydro money
  2. Buy outside the heat wave. A quote taken in April is not the quote you get during a July heat warning
  3. Right-size rather than rounding up. An oversized condenser costs more, cycles more, dehumidifies less, and wears out sooner
  4. If a furnace replacement is coming, do both in one visit — the coil goes in while the plenum is already open and you pay for that access once
  5. Where only two rooms are the problem, a single ductless head at $2,500–$5,000 fixes it for a third of a central system
  6. Keep the outdoor coil clear of hedge growth and leaf litter. A blocked condenser is the single most common cause of a service call that never needed to happen

The newer subdivisions in the Mission, Black Mountain and West Kelowna are ducted, gas-heated and were sized for cooling from the start, so replacing equipment is largely a matter of matching tonnage to what the ducts can move. The older lakeside and hillside stock is the harder half: smaller panels, tighter mechanical rooms, and hot afternoon exposure that argues for a fresh load calculation instead of repeating whatever tonnage was there before.
